A new research work has highlighted the virtues of walnuts, a superfood with the ability to extend life and reduce the risk of developing different problems or diseases cardiovascular type.
And, although the important health benefits of these nuts are known, a new study led by the TH Chan School of Public Health, Harvard University (United States) has further strengthened the existing evidence.
Specifically, they point out that the consumption of walnuts is linked to a lower risk of death and an increase in life expectancy among older adults.
Walnuts, a superfood that prolongs life
Yanping Li, who is the principal responsible for this research on walnuts, states that “what we have learned from this study is that even a few handfuls of walnuts a week can help promote longevity, especially among those whose diet quality is not adequate. great to start with. This is an investigative work that has been supported by the California Nut Commission. Specifically, the researchers found that taking five or more 30-gram servings of walnuts a week can provide a great benefit in terms of mortality risk and life expectancy.
And is that the consumption of 30 grams of nuts provides important micronutrients essential for health, such as protein, fiber, magnesium or omega-3.
Thus, the intake of five or more servings of this superfood per week was associated with a 14% lower risk of death from any cause; as well as a 25% lower risk of dying from cardiovascular diseases.
Similarly, the consumption of walnuts means an increase in life expectancy by 1.43 years compared to those people who do not take walnuts. This is how this research work collects it.
Carrying out the study
To carry out this research work that has placed walnuts as a superfood to extend life, the researchers analyzed the data of a total of 67,014 women from the Nurses’ Health Study with an average age of 63.6 years and 26,326 men from Health Professionals Follow-up Study with an age of 63.3 years in 1986 (the first cycle of data collection on the consumption of walnuts in both cohorts).
Furthermore, the participants were relatively healthy when they joined these studies. Thus, their dietary consumption was analyzed every 4 years.
It was the participants themselves who reported their nutritional intake. In this sense, they had to communicate the frequency in which they ate nuts, other dried fruits and peanuts; as well as the realization of physical exercise or recurrence of smokers.
Finally, the authors of this research explain that it is a prospective observational study and that therefore, these results do not offer the existence of a cause-effect relationship. However, they shed light on how walnuts as a superfood can promote longevity among the population.
In addition, it should be noted that the participants who ate a greater amount of nuts also showed a greater tendency to be more physically active, consume less alcohol, take multivitamins or eat a healthy diet. And is that all these factors are also key to increasing life expectancy.
