The surprising reason why avocado is considered an ‘aphrodisiac’

The fashion of avocado it seems to have no roof. To its great nutritional and healthy properties, it has been added that in Spain it has become very fashionable in recent years, which has made the avocado one of the most sought-after fruits on the market today.

Avocado is a fruit that has a creamy and greenish texture, with a hazelnut flavor and to which aphrodisiac properties are attributed “justly or unjustly”. That is, the one known as “green gold” has certain functions when it comes to keeping our sexual health active.

At first, the Aztecs called the avocado with the name of “ahuacatl” which means “testicle” because of the shape that the fruit presents when it is still on the tree. In fact, the arrival of the Spaniards led to the avocado being renamed “pear of the Indies”, a less striking name, but which did not end the historical properties of this fruit.

One of the most popular fruits in Spain

Meanwhile, in Spain, the most consumed fruits today are still oranges with 724 million kilos, followed by banana with 590 million kilos, apple with 468 million kilos and watermelon with 437 million kilos.

Despite this, and although it does not lead the ranking of most consumed fruits, avocado has a production that is close to 100 million kilos in 2020, being the production in 2019 of 94 million, in 2018 of 74 million and in 2017 the 55 million . As we can see, avocado is one of the crops with the greatest projection in Spain, being the second largest supplier to the EU with 14% of the volume, only behind the Netherlands.

Avocado, an ideal complement

A biochemical analysis of the composition of avocado elevates it to the Olympus of the most complete foods that we can include in our diet. In the first place, this is because avocado has a high amount of monounsaturated fats that protect us against cardiovascular problems by normalizing total cholesterol, reducing LDL and increasing HDL.

Likewise, avocado is the source of 70% of the amino acids that our body needs, having a high fiber content that acts as a satiating agent, prevents constipation and regulates blood glucose levels.

According to a study conducted by Yale University, avocado has a high presence of monounsaturated fatty acid. Properties quite similar to those of oleic oil (that of EVOO), and that could be useful to combat the effects caused by diseases such as multiple sclerosis.

In fact, during the study, patients with sclerosis had lower than usual values of these fatty acids. Apparently, patients who ate foods rich in oleic acid had a better prognosis. Thus, the authors themselves stressed that more similar studies are needed to corroborate this hypothesis.

For this reason, it seems indisputable that avocado is a healthy food that allows us to improve our body and maintain a healthy mind. Therefore, either directly or indirectly, avocado allows us to improve many vital aspects, including those that lead us to consider it as an aphrodisiac food.
